China is leading the race for the fastest supercomputer

The primacy already belonged to the Chinese, but now it comes the new super champion, which can boast to be five times faster, and therefore more powerful, than the best USA supercomputer.

It’s called Sunway TaihuLight and is officially the fastest supercomputer in the world. The technical numbers are almost incomprehensible, unimaginable for anyone: of theoretical peak performance of 125 petaflops, 10,649,600 of core, and 1.31 petabytes of main memory. Perhaps it is more understandable to say that this single computer puts “in series” 800,000 normal home computer quad core processors.

The Chinese are also proud that the new supercomputer was all made with processors manufactured in China, indicating not only a “consumer” technological supremacy, as the mobile phones we have in our pocket. Fifteen years ago, throughout the huge country there was not even one of the 500 most powerful computers in the world. Today, China leads the supercomputing challenge.

The race to the calculation superspeed is not just a matter of technological prestige: the faster the supercomputer, the more precise the realization of studies on models, and simulations from meteorology to the origins of the universe.
